Ancrum

An old lady is murdered in the Scottish Borders town of Ancrum and Joe Samuelson of the Lothian and Borders Police is sent to investigate. It seems to be an open and shut case with all the evidence pointing to the old lady’s niece whose husband, coincidentally, is also missing, with evidence to suggest he, too, is dead. While there is insufficient evidence to try the niece for the murder of her husband, there is no doubt that she killed her aunt and she is sent to prison. A year later the husband turns up with proof that she could not possibly have killed her aunt. Joe is retired in disgrace and Kingdom is assigned to re-investigate the year-old case. This proves to be his most baffling and difficult case so far.
